Creating Dynamic Segments

Dynamic segments group readers automatically based on rules, behaviour or stored reader information.

What is a dynamic segment?

A dynamic segment updates itself when contacts match the conditions you set. For example, a reader can automatically appear in a “Highly Engaged Readers” segment if they opened or clicked recent emails.

Useful author segments

  • Highly engaged readers
  • Inactive readers
  • ARC team
  • Readers who clicked a preorder link
  • Readers interested in a specific series
  • Audiobook readers
  • Readers from a specific signup source
  • Readers who downloaded a specific reader magnet

How to create a segment

  • Open Contacts & Readers.
  • Choose the list you want to segment.
  • Select Create Segment.
  • Add your rule or condition.
  • Preview the matching contacts.
  • Name and save the segment.

Example segment rules

  • Genre preference is Paranormal Romance.
  • Clicked any email in the last 90 days.
  • Opened fewer than one campaign in the last 180 days.
  • Tag is ARC Team.
  • Signup source is Reader Magnet.

Best practices

  • Name segments clearly.
  • Keep conditions simple.
  • Review segment performance.
  • Avoid sending too often to very small segments unless the content is highly relevant.

Author example

If you launch a new werewolf romance, you could send the main launch email to all readers, then send an extra bonus excerpt to readers tagged as paranormal or shifter romance fans.
