Adding Attributes to Your List

Attributes are custom pieces of reader information that help you organise, segment and personalise your email marketing.

What are attributes?

Attributes are fields attached to a reader record. They allow you to store useful information beyond just name and email address.

Author-friendly attribute ideas

  • Favourite genre
  • Favourite trope
  • Preferred format
  • Series interest
  • Reader magnet downloaded
  • Signup source
  • ARC team status
  • Country
  • Reviewer status
  • VIP reader status

How authors can use attributes

  • Send audiobook news only to audiobook readers.
  • Send dark romance promos only to dark romance readers.
  • Create ARC team automations.
  • Track which reader magnet brought someone in.
  • Personalise welcome sequences based on interest.

How to add an attribute

  • Open the relevant list or audience settings.
  • Find custom fields or attributes.
  • Create a new attribute with a clear name.
  • Choose the field type if required.
  • Save the attribute.
  • Import or update contacts with attribute values.

Best practices

  • Use simple names.
  • Avoid duplicate fields such as Genre and Favourite Genre unless they mean different things.
  • Do not collect sensitive data unless truly necessary.
  • Only create attributes you will use in campaigns or segments.

Example

An author could add an attribute called Preferred Format with values such as ebook, paperback or audio. Later, they can send audiobook announcements only to readers who selected audio.
